It was this dual fascination with the cosmos and creativity that shaped her educational path, leading her to Phillips Exeter Academy and ultimately to the prestigious halls of MIT.
The Balancing Act
At MIT, Shields initially struggled with the rigor of scientific study but found solace in the arts, joining choir, theater, and an a cappella group. Her life was a dance between her scientific ambition and her artistic passion, ultimately leading her to pursue graduate studies in acting at UCLA, only to find her way back to astronomy.

Today, Shields is not only a professor at UC Irvine but also a pioneer. She founded Rising Stargirls, a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring young girls from diverse backgrounds to explore the universe through theater and art.
