This is the daily life of Carmen Suárez Vázquez, who loves her little teal-painted house in Guayama, Puerto Rico. However, lurking behind this charm is a dark problem—the polluting coal plant nearby.
The only coal plant on the island, owned by the giant AES, is a hidden threat. Over the years, it has caused harm to the environment and the health of nearby residents. For Carmen, this isn't just a story; it’s personal. She lost her youngest son, Edgardo, to cancer, and she believes the coal pollution from the plant is linked to his illness. The air quality is so poor that she has to seal her windows with plastic to keep out the toxic dust that coats everything, even her kitchen supplies.
More Pollution, More Problems
Since the coal plant started operating, cancer rates in Guayama have skyrocketed from about 103 cases to over 200 cases per year. Studies from the University of Puerto Rico suggest that the risk of serious health issues like heart disease and respiratory problems is growing. This raises tough questions: Why does Puerto Rico still rely on coal after all the harm it has caused?
A Dark Future for Energy
Adding to the frustration, the island’s government just rolled back its clean energy goals, eliminating a plan to get 40% of energy from renewables by 2025. This decision could anchor Puerto Rico in a dirty energy future, keeping the community at risk while limiting progress towards cleaner alternatives that could protect homes and health.
